Nonneoplastic Hepatobiliary Disease

Abstract

The liver is susceptible to infections, alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic diseases, and developmental abnormalities. Its central role in drug metabolism predisposes it to an array of drug-induced injuries which may mimic any known pattern of liver injury. However, notwithstanding the number of conditions discussed in this chapter, the majority of cases of liver disease are attributable to the big four: hepatitis C, hepatitis B, alcoholic fatty liver disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This is followed by autoimmune and drug-induced liver injury in developed countries and by viral and parasitic infections in less developed and tropical parts of the globe.
