eHealth and mHealth in Pediatric Oncology

Abstract

The use of eHealth and mHealth technologies is rapidly increasing in pediatric chronic medical conditions. Although research into the use of these technologies is in its initial stages of development and evaluation in pediatric oncology, eHealth and mHealth technologies are widely used for clinical and supportive care. This chapter reviews the current eHealth and mHealth literature base for electronic symptom monitoring, Internet education and interventions, and virtual reality interventions for children with cancer. We utilize a psychosocial patient-centered perspective to review this area across the stages of cancer treatment including diagnosis and early treatment, treatment and maintenance therapy, and long-term survivorship. While the evidence base is too small to make any definitive interpretations of the efficacy of eHealth and mHealth assessment and intervention in pediatric cancer, these technologies have enormous opportunity and promise for improving clinical care for children with cancer. We anticipate and encourage researchers to conduct large-scale evaluations of eHealth and mHealth interventions in pediatric cancer.
