Antitumor Essential Oils
Abstract
Cancer is a growing sickness worldwide each year, and the second cause of death among the world’s population. The available therapeutic methods are still insufficient to obtain an effective cure or improve the quality of life of patients. Despite the development of anticancer drugs in recent decades, there remains a need for more efficacious and less toxic drugs in the treatment of cancer. In this context, the natural products are an indispensable source in the discovery of drugs with antitumor activity. Among these products, there are the essential oils which show pharmacological properties, such as the antitumor activity. This chapter addresses relevant issues published in the literature on the in vitro and in vivo antitumor activities of essential oils. Pharmacological aspects are discussed regarding the bioactive constituents of essential oils and mechanisms of action. The gathered data provide important information for phytomolecules which can be used as pharmacological tools for the synthesis of compounds in formulation of new drugs in the near future.
