Comparison of Original and Re-coated Cutting Tools Machining Steel
Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the performance of original and re-ground twist drills and considers the variation in the form of re-grinding that is applied to a drill after it reaches its wear limit. The following variables were considered: coating material (uncoated, TiAlN and AlCrN) and re-coating routine after re-grinding (no re-coating, re-coating over previous coating and after removal of the previous coating). The parameters evaluators of performance were: tool wear, thrust force and torque. The results showed that, in general, that re-ground drills performed worse than the original drills. Among the coated drills only drills with TiAlN, which were stripped (removal of the previous coating) + re-ground + re-coated (insertion of a new TiAlN coating) obtained values closest to the original drills. The results also showed that even boring a smaller amount of holes, drills without coating showed higher wear than the coated drills. These drills produced in most tests, higher thrust forces and higher torque values.
