Socio-Technical Procedures of Facilitated Mass Collaboration for Creative E-Participation
Abstract
A case of mass collaboration in the area of democratic dialogues is investigated. Six citizen dialogues and a summit were conducted where an average of 80 participants came together for each meeting to develop new ideas about how to deal with societal problems in the demographic context. This case is compared with findings in the literature on mass collaboration, on e-participation in the context of democratic dialogues, on facilitation and coordination of groups, and on creativity support. Potentials and problems are derived from this comparison. The investigation concludes with a description of socio-technical requirements for transferring the face-to-face meetings to online-mediated mass collaboration and combining the advantages of both. The requirements focus on intensifying the degree of facilitation, collaboration, and creativity as well as on raising the level of participation.
