Abstract

Pain can be associated with both localized tumors and metastatic cancer. It becomes more pervasive as the disease progresses. Tumor invasion of the bone, which commonly occurs in breast cancer, prostate cancer, and multiple myeloma, accounts for pain in approximately half of these patients. Most other causes of tumor related pain comprise nerve compression or infiltration (neuropathic pain), or tumor involvement in the gastrointestinal tract or soft tissue (somatic pain).
