Geophysical and Geodetical Monitoring of Slope Movements at the Three Gorges Dam Area of the Yangtze River in China
Abstract
The Three Gorges Dam area of the Yangtze River in China is one of the most prominent examples of anthropogenic large-scale environmental impact. The steep sloping uphill sites next to the reservoir are affected by enormous water level changes and the general rising water level in the recent years. This causes various severe environmental problems resulting in an overall increase of the georisk potential. Within the framework of the BMBF funded project YANGTZE GEO (2012–2015), Sino-German scientists jointly focus on the ecological and geologic risks at the reservoir. DMT as the industrial project partner refines own developments in terms of geohazard identification and geomonitoring systems and applies complex measurement equipment referring to microseismicity and terrestrial radarinterferometry. Both techniques observe and analyze changes on slope surface as well as in the deeper subsurface on site in a state-of-the-art and highly precise manner. The paper gives an overview of the project and presents the current state of the geophysical and geodetic monitoring applied at the area of the Three Gorges Dam.
