A Geotechnical Monitoring Project for Early Warning: The Monte Stregone Landslide

Conference paper

Abstract

The Monte Stregone landslide is an active instable sector of a larger complex and compound landslide, which has been subjected to repeated historical events. Geological setting is characterized by sequences of sandstone and marls and at the base calcarenites and biocalcarenites. The trend is monoclinalitic with dip angle 15–20° N to NE direction. The photogeology analysis shows faults with orientation E-W, NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE; of particular interest is the fault “BagniVisone”, dip slip type, having E-W direction. Considering the high risk area, a specific project for hydrological remedial measures and monitoring of the Monte Stregone landslide and Bagni district has been developed, within the Act for the Program Agreement between the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea and the Regione Piemonte. In order to mitigate the risk, the project has provided alongside the implementation of hydrological countermeasures, the installation of DMS monitoring systems, to understand the triggering factors and at the same time to guarantee the Early Warning (EW) functions.
