Linguistic Ideologies of Language Revitalization

Abstract
This chapter sums up the argument that Native American language revitalization has been shaped (and misguided) by the official model of language standardization, resulting in a grammar and dictionary (often recognized by a tribal council) from which foreign language teaching materials are derived and neglected after they prove to be of little interest and impetus for them in the classroom. Along the way, we have talked about alternatives, and factors influencing the possible outcomes of revitalization and revival projects. These factors, cast here as “Laws” of Language Revitalization, are summed up in Chap. 6.
