Abstract
The responsibilities of any medical specialty that has earned and continues to merit the public’s trust are to maintain quality, to expand the application of its expertise and to assess and later to employ new technologies that enhance its capability to provide care. But in our society we must add another consideration—i.e., the demography of any specialty should be in general accord with the various constituencies of the national population so that all those who aspire to enter the profession sense that the opportunity to do so is available to them.
