Abstract
The simplest and commonest parameter of inflammation. It is best at assessing disease activity in certain diseases (polymyalgia rheumatica) and in systemic diseases of the connective tissue (systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, Sjögren’s syndrome) in which C-reactive protein (CRP) is often not significantly increased. The combination of ESR and CRP is often very useful in assessing the disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other diseases.
