Phonon Mechanisms of Intrinsic Dielectric Loss in Crystals
Abstract
Most crystalline solids have phonon spectra that consist of rather sharp lines, i. e. the maximum frequencies are much greater than the half-width of them or in other words, in these crystals, the relative damping of phonons is small. The theory of intrinsic dielectric loss in such crystals is well developed. The detailed discussion of the problem (theory, analysis of the experimental data and the bibliography) can be found in the recently published review by Gurevich and Tagantsev (1991) or in the book by Gurevich (1986). The aim of this paper, based on Gurevich and Tagantsev, (1991), is to present a brief review of fundamentals of the theory, to list the main results and to indicate the most important issues of the theory from the point of view of the experimentalist. Below the references to (Gurevich, 1991; 1986) will be omitted.
