Oxidative stress in neurobiology: An important role for iron

Summary
The brain has regions with a high iron content, and selective increases in iron occur in several neurological diseases. Low levels of intrinsic antioxidants and high levels of oxidisable substrate (polyunsaturated fatty acids) make the brain a vulnerable target for oxidative stress leading to molecular damage.
