Abstract

Recently, statistical fluctuations in proton induced reactions have found renewed interest by the inclusion of isospin-dependent effects in the statistical model 1). Two independent sets of compound levels, T< and T> states can be excited by proton bombardment whereas isospin selection rules prevent the decay of T> states via (p,α) reactions. The different coherence widths found for (p,p) and (p,α) reactions on 31p were interpreted as a consequence of isospin selection rules 2). The availability of high intensity polarized ion sources allows investigations of fluctuations in excitation functions of analyzing powers in sufficiently small energy steps.
