Abstract

This chapter assesses the impact of the A1 motorway on the accessibility of settlements in the West Region of Romania, using the distance-based and time-based connectivity index. This method allows for a better understanding of the changes involved in the accessibility of settlements. The impact of the motorway on travel times to and from Bucharest, as well as to and from the main cities of the region (Timișoara and Arad) has been assessed in detail. The competition between these cities and those outside the region (Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Oradea and Craiova) has also been examined. The greatest impact of the motorway in terms of accessibility is on the rural areas around the motorway exits. However, marginal areas in the mountains, especially in southern Caraș-Severin County, remain largely unaffected by the completion of the motorway.
