Abstract

In the globalizing world, the rapidly increasing energy need and environmentally friendly methods have made it obligatory to tend to alternative energy production methods which are independent from fossil fuels. Biomass, among all the energy resources that are considered as alternative to conventional energy production based on fossil fuels, plays a significant role as a local resource that can be used. Pyrolysis and gasification are promising technologies used for the conversion of biomass to valuable hydrocarbons and alternative fuels. The purposes of this study are to examine the status of renewable energy and biomass as an alternative energy carrier or resource and to assess the gasification in thermochemical degradation of biomass. All those topics have been supported by up-to-date scientific literature. In this study, the potential of biomass energy, which is one of the most important renewable energy sources, has been examined and the efficiency of gasification process, which is one of the important methods in biomass conversion, has been demonstrated. In the light of the information obtained from the literature, it was concluded that gasification technologies have an important potential in obtaining renewable synthetic fuels from biomass as transition to 100% renewable energy has been targeted widespread.
