“Going along to get along” is certainly good advice for a newly minted politician and is something veteran politicians will expect. But how does the newcomer stand out from other newcomers and get the attention of those insiders who control the levers of power? Here the author makes an important distinction, between collegial superiors (for instance, more senior politicians in the same legislature) and hierarchical superiors of, for instance, a state senator (such as the US senators from that same state). How the newcomer deals with these different sets of superiors can prove important.
