Getting re-elected requires you keeping your constituents—the locals back home—happy. If you forget that, you’ll be back home soon enough. But there’s another reason politics is local. People, no matter what their background, are much the same the world over. National and international issues are really only local issues writ large, because the feelings and emotions that can disturb relations between countries simply mirror the emotions that disturb relations within families and between neighbors—envy, greed, resentment over some slight. A source of both constant excitement and nervous anxiety to politicians is the need to resolve these matters in a manner that most people can live with even if few people can love. The fact that politicians cannot always achieve that goal leaves them only one option: to pray the problem will go away.
