Technique for Shape Forming in Field Rendering

Abstract

The polygon-based method is a technique for field rendering. This technique produces virtual surface sources of light in the 3D scene, which has an arbitrary tilt angle and shape. The surface sources are the counterparts of polygons or patches in CG. Thus, using the surface source, we can calculate the field of an object represented by a polygon-mesh as in CG. The detailed technique is discussed in this chapter. We deal with the actual procedure as well as the basic principle to implement the technique in software. Not only generation of simple diffused surfaces but also specular flat and smooth surfaces is presented on the base of the Phong reflection model.
