Monteggia and Monteggia Variant Fractures

  • Michael Karl-Heinz Wich

Monteggia and Monteggia variant injuries are a rare entity in the adolescent trauma patient. They are still a challenge for the orthopedic surgeon because of the combination of fracture and joint dislocation in the complex anatomical and biomechanical area of the elbow. The elbow function as well as forearm rotation is dependent on anatomic fracture fixation, restoration of the bone and joint axis, and stable humeroulnar, humeroradial, and ulnoradial joints.

This chapter will demonstrate how to surgically approach these fractures and what to consider in order to optimize treatment outcome.
