Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the simple inorganic or organic gels obtained after drying, from simple organic or inorganic wet gels. More complex hybrid organic-inorganic materials and polymer or surfactant-templated materials are addressed in Chaps.  10 and  11. The texture and structure of these simple gels are first presented. A few main types of gel are next reviewed and comprise a few typical oxide gels as well as non-oxide inorganic gels, including carbon nanotubes and graphene aerogels, and simple organic aerogels. Two important general properties are finally reviewed, comprising thermal conduction and mechanical properties.
