Considering the rather impressive list of films that French cinema devoted to the Algerian war, one might be tempted to conclude that the outcome is globally positive. The production of audiovisual works that have dealt with the conflict since 1958 is, it is true, not to be underrated. Before the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary, around fifty fictions and a hundred or so French documentaries were counted. However,
  • Most of the fictions were produced by and for television channels, the cinema remaining well behind in these statistics.

  • During the first thirty years after independence, the number of documentaries amounted to 27.

  • In France, censors remained very active until 1973, essentially concerning fiction.
