Dermatopathology in the inpatient setting must address the challenge of diagnosing conditions that may present both greater acuity and relatively subtle findings. Novel histopathologic findings in response to new therapies are often first studied and described in specimens from hospitalized patients. Dermatopathologists working in the hospital setting have the advantage of a team approach but may need to tailor the language of their reports to their target audience including non-dermatologists. A challenge is the need to work under increased time pressure; frozen section methods can be usefully applied to inpatient diagnosis in selected cases.
