Perennial wetland herb with tuberous tap roots. Stem erect, up to 1.5 m high. Leaves deeply palmately lobed with narrow, deeply divided segments. Flowers in terminal racemes, petaloid sepals dark blue to purple, the upper forming an elongated hood, petals in the form of nectaries. Fruit is an aggregate of follicles. Very variable species with several subspecies.
