Meredith chose as his second wife a woman as unlike his first as it is possible to imagine, a much younger woman, devoutly religious, a woman who captivated him by her expert knowledge of the price of sheets and towels. His choice of partner and the upbringing he gave his daughter by his second marriage after Marie’s death offer an opportunity to examine Meredith’s claim to be regarded as the foremost male feminist of all the late Victorian novelists.
