The chapter treats Meredith’s childhood, from his schooling to his return to England after attending a Moravian school in Germany. It focuses on class, so crucial an issue not just in Meredith’s novels but in those of his major contemporaries. Meredith was born the son of a tailor, a lowly origin that was, according to W. S. Blunt, ‘the secret trouble of his life’. The chapter includes a reading of Evan Harrington, the novel in which Meredith confronts his family origins most directly.
