Introduction: Starting from Scratch
This chapter begins by acknowledging the voice of the researcher. It discusses her background, training, and education, as well as her work experience leading up to the time of the research. It reveals her reasons for engaging in the study of dance in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), following her acceptance of a contract to create a new dance concentration, with the intention of continuing to develop a dance major. More than this, the directive to create dance programs within an HBCU required the author to research her school’s mission and vision, as well as the history of HBCUs in general. This book reflects that search for information.
