This chapter will begin by looking at several examples of motherhood in contemporary Broadway that defy the categorizations of absent, overbearing, or inconsequential. Caroline or Change and Next to Normal give an alternate path of motherhood that may baffle the audience, but are productive for the mother figures. These are not traditional mothers, but their forms of mothering that offer freedom for the character and expand ways of thinking for the audience. After exploring these examples, this chapter will return to the theoretical premises of the introduction and offers suggestion for future productions.
