A Significant Change
Returning to a life of tutorial work in Falmouth, SPT faced a division between traditional and evangelical Quakers. Following a meeting with Benjamin Newton (his cousin by marriage), SPT experienced an evangelical conversion and was introduced by Newton to the ‘Plymouth Brethren’ with whom he began to worship. His passionate interest in ancient history led to a fascination with prophecy, and this in turn energized his biblical enquiries. These found practical expression in years of work on Wigram’s Hebrew and Greek Concordances, as well as in editorial work for Bagster’s publishing house after his move to London.
