Abstract

Physalis peruviana, is a herbaceous species native from South America, belonging to the family Solanaceae. This chapter offers a comprehensive review of the literature, conducing to summarize clinical effects on health benefits of both fruits and calyx. Physalis peruviana has been shown several properties, highlighting antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects. Vitamins, whitanolides, physalins constituents are involved in those mechanisms of action. There is strong evidence supporting that Physalis peruviana could improve insulin sensitivity, and type 2 diabetes, which are currently two of the world’s biggest health problems. Further research is needed to clarify the importance of the reported experimental effects and to characterize the optimum fruit preparation for use in the treatment of non transmissible chronical diseases.
