Saint Francis of Paola – Humility and Non-violence

  • László Erdős

Saint Francis of Paola, the friar and healer can be regarded as a forerunner of animal advocacy. His belief in non-violence was so strong that he abstained from eating meat and other animal products like eggs and dairy. Moreover, he included vegan diet among the rules of his order, the Order of Minims. According to the legends of Saint Francis of Paola, he repeatedly rescued animals from hunters and was able to revive dead animals. He had extraordinarily friendships with animals, including his pet lamb Martinello and a trout named Antonella.
