Abstract

“The scientist describes what is,” wrote Theodore von Kármán. “The engineer creates what never was.” Aristotle believed there were seven liberal arts: subjects that are suitable for the development of intellectual and moral excellence, as distinguished from those that are merely useful or practical. I believe that the invention of new technology is its own art—the eighth liberal art.
