Abstract

While esophageal cancer is an uncommon cancer in the USA, it is endemic in other parts of the world, especially East Asia. Adenocarcinomas of the lower esophagus and gastroesophageal junction now account for most cases in the USA, while squamous cell carcinoma accounts for nearly all cases in endemic areas. While there have been incremental improvements in the treatment of esophageal cancer, outcomes remain modest overall. This chapter focuses on validated pre-, peri-, and post-operative strategies for locally advanced disease, which include chemotherapy and/or chemoradiation. Evolving treatment strategies and areas of uncertainty are also discussed.
