The essay conceives of seriality in terms of an open-ended process, making use of dynamic repetition, so as to think about intertextuality as a sustained series of returns to cultural concerns and their aesthetic shapings, addressing a continual haunting of the present by the past. The discussion of a set of contemporary TV dramas—Mad Men, The Wire, and Westworld—serves to illustrate how this particular aesthetic form itself reflects on seriality as a dynamic repetition.
