The Danger of Making Decisions for Evolution, Quality of Care, and Education Based on National Health Data

  • Björn Barenius

As an Orthopaedic Sport Medicine surgeon, I worry that the Swedish health care system is too focused on effectivity and cost oriented, to make room for education and evolution of new treatment options, in this short essay I will present why. Swedish health care often gets praise for its quality and cost-effectiveness. In Sweden there is a strong dominance for tax financed health care. The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions have published reports of the quality and effectiveness of the health care provided in the different regions in Sweden compared with other countries and health care systems since 2005. In these publications Sweden is often among the top countries in the world according to the assessed indexes. So, what is there to worry about?
