Abstract

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons defines orthopaedic surgery as ‘the medical specialty that includes the investigation, preservation and restoration of the form and function of the extremities, spine and associated structures by medical, surgical, and physical means. Besides trauma of the musculoskeletal system, the current speciality deals with growth disorders and developmental issues around the skeleton, degenerative arthritis and congenital deformities. To that end, the speciality has been undergoing a process of refinement overtime, and orthopaedic surgeons currently use technology extensively and a great number of modern devices in their daily practice.
