Abstract

I believe that one of the challenges faced in the field of musculoskeletal surgery is the great potential but also pitfalls of “biologic” approaches for augmentation of tissue healing. There is universal agreement that cytokines, novel small peptides, platelet-rich plasma, and other blood-derived products, stem cells, innovative biomaterials, and gene therapy techniques all hold tremendous promise for improvement in healing of many types of musculoskeletal tissues. However, there are currently a number of scientific, logistical, and regulatory hurdles to overcome before these therapies can be used on a widespread basis.
