Reduction, Repetition, Returns: The Trouble of Minimalism

Abstract

Jonathan Burrows’ choreography has been defined in critical literature in terms of its relationship with minimalist dance and music traditions. Perazzo Domm questions the productivity of these categorisations and draws attention to the generative ambiguity of the formalist dance tradition’s engagement with content. Through an analysis of examples of Burrows’ choreographic work, from The Stop Quartet (1996) to Body Not Fit for Purpose (2014), the chapter interrogates how they frustrate the distinction between reduction and excess. Attending to the stratified nature of the works, Perazzo Domm argues that Burrows’ dances offer a critical and po(i)etic restaging of the concerns of minimalism.
