Erwin Panofsky is famous as one of the most important art historians of the 20th century. His “Galileo as a Critic of the Arts”, first published in English in 1955, is an exceptional piece in his production, since it focuses not so much on art but on science, with a rather provocative thesis—the great Galileo missed the discovery of the elliptical trajectory of planets because of his aesthetical tastes! This paper aims at explicating and clarifying the historical background to an extraordinarily rich and complex argument.
