Émigré Children and the French School at Penn (Buckinghamshire): 1796–1814

Abstract

No other country in Europe, 1792–1815, created a military school specifically to educate French émigré boys or to prepare them for their return to France after the revolutionary wars. This elite school in Buckinghamshire, championed by Edmund Burke, was to teach French culture and habits, using free labour provided by the émigré priests. Its mission was not to indoctrinate the French children in British habits and customs, but to instruct them in their own language and heritage. A unique episode in the Franco-British history of emigration, this chapter explores the problems and contradictions of the creation and running of the school, its curriculum and its teaching challenges particularly in regard to the teaching of the English language in a school dedicated to perpetuating French identity.
