Abstract

The knee MRI exam is perhaps the most common MSK MRI exam performed and is especially helpful for evaluating the intra-articular structures. Meniscal tears, cruciate ligament injuries, tendon injuries, and articular cartilage defects are best seen on MR imaging due to its high soft tissue contrast. MRI of the knee can also be helpful for preoperative planning in patients with a “locked” knee due to an impinging loose body or displaced meniscal fragment. A large portion of this section is focused on meniscal pathology and describing anatomic pitfalls that can mimic a meniscal tear. We then include additional common injuries that you are likely to encounter when interpreting MRI exams of the knee.
