Snapshots of War

  • Patricia Laurence
Part of the Literary Lives book series (LL)

This chapter highlights Bowen’s wartime experiences. Being as old as the century, she lived through World War I and the Irish War of Independence as an adolescent and young woman, and World War II and the Cold War, when mature. She became more of a public intellectual and documentary writer during World War II and captured the undercurrent of personal and national violence in The Heat of the Day though the story of the war was largely untold; her wartime collection, The Demon Lover; and The House in Paris.
