Abstract

Bloembergen used ruby lasers for his research on nonlinear optics. Ruby also has a more familiar variant as an ornamental stone. The beauty of the gem only shines in all its splendor if the stone is given the so-called brilliant cut. There is a main surface, called the table, perpendicular to the viewing direction.
