Displays of Tolerance Toward Islam

  • Nathan Ron

A few prominent sixteenth-century humanists demonstrated a relatively moderate and tolerant attitude toward Islam: Michael Servetus, Sebastian Franck, and Sebastian Castellio. Their ideas of Islam and the linkage between their attitude and Erasmus’ thought are discussed here. Despite his harsh attitude toward Islam and the Turks, Erasmus’ thought influenced other thinkers to develop tolerant attitudes toward Islam. His critical approach to scriptural texts, his innovative interpretations, and the principles of faith and morality that he taught and promoted ignited a non-conventional religious thinking by the aforesaid humanists, who demonstrated an attitude toward Islam that was peculiarly different from Erasmus’ own.
