Abstract
This chapter deals with current topics in valvular heart disease. Focusing on the most common types of diseased valve encountered in routine surgical practice including floppy mitral valves, degenerate tricuspid aortic valves and congenital bicuspid aortic valves. The pathology of infective endocarditis and rheumatic valvular heart disease is also discussed. Macroscopic and microscopic images of the different valve pathologies are provided as well as a detailed description of valve pathophysiology. The scientific data underlying the pathogenesis of the different forms of valvular heart disease is provided.
