Royal Requiem

Abstract

Here, Nash looks at the modern requests of some governments to return royal bodies for repatriation in the causes of dynastic completion, completing mosaics of national history, and possibly to consider restoring monarchies.

The examples of Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Russia, Bulgaria, and Roumania are considered, the Transatlantic monarchy of the Empire of Brazil, and the Empire of Ethiopia.

Older examples drawn from Habsburg history and practice are also analysed by Nash; the important restitutions, eventually, after many exhumations, of Peter III of Russia, Prince Potemkin, King Stanislas Poniatowski of Poland, and the many Romanovs, including Grand Duchess Serge (who would also qualify under Chap.  8).
