Abstract

The ShortTube 80 is one of the most successful telescopes to ever have been marketed, with hundreds of thousands of units having been sold over the last 30 years. Its simple design, using a traditional crown and flint object glass, small size, and ultra-portability has made it a huge hit with the amateur astronomy and birding community. But like all success stories in telescope manufacture, that hard-earned reputation did not emerge overnight; it developed naturally as its versatility was appreciated by a growing number of observers and imagers over three decades. In this chapter, we’ll be looking back on its various incarnations that have thrilled amateur astronomers from the time it first appeared in the mid-1990s.
