How to protect Earth from meteoroids, asteroids and comets

Abstract

Since the fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite, the problem of protecting Earth’s population and infrastructure from meteoroids has become an extremely important one, because for the first time in recent history the shockwave from this bolide was comparable to the effects of other natural disasters. According to the Head Administration of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies in Chelyabinsk Region, 1,613 people suffered injuries, mainly from shattered window panes, and 7,420 buildings and structures were damaged, which resulted in total losses of more than one billion rubles (about $15.5 million).
