Abstract

This chapter looks at what laboratory testing is, a very brief understanding of how to interpret the laboratory results, what common lab tests are ordered, what they are used for, and what they mean to an office-based practitioner. The laboratory tests covered in this chapter are the white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, international normalized ratio, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, culture and sensitivity, permanent stain, immunofluorescence, and the urine pregnancy test.
