This book challenges the utility of off-scale military spending and the illusory search for hegemony, illustrating how both are responsible for the paradox that the most militarily powerful nation, the United States, is increasingly less able to persuade others to do what it wants, instead making maximalist demands, downplaying compromise, and embarking upon interventions that diminish rather than enhance its influence. Emphasizing the importance of America’s core values for shaping domestic and foreign policies, the book concludes by utilizing tragedy as a framework for an intelligent and probing rethinking of the country’s role in the world and providing a vision and blueprint for a new congress and president to reorient America’s relationship with the world.
